It's a myth that e-readers are environmentally friendly. Soon there will be 100 million readers out there. What exactly is an e-reader? About a pound of battery, aluminum, rubber, plastic, metal, silicon, a little gold, and rare metals like columbite-tantalite--taken from the earth, usually from the oft-exploited Africa. To make just one e-reader: 33 lbs of minerals, 79 gal water to refine the minerals & make the battery and wiring. The harmful health effects from making an e-reader are about 70 times greater than those for making a single book. Plus, the 100 mil e-readers will be outmoded by Christmas, replaced by a 100 mil "new & improved" models...ad infinitum. An environmental disaster. To make a printed book, all that's needed is recycled paper, a few minerals, 2 gal water (batteries not necessary). If trees are used, they can be replanted. Truth: In the end, we and this earth are together better off without e-readers. I realize that won't happen because we're so enchanted by all our gizmos, but it's the truth just the same
Are e-readers an environmental hazard
