You do realise that the suit is filed in NY because software patents are not recognised in the rest of the world? The Nokia/Apple suits are about actual inventions -hardware.
And yes, I am a software engineer and yes, I do believe that software patents (as distinct from copyright and trademarks) are bad for the business and explain why much of the most exciting work in software is now done outside the US.
Kodak should be asking itself why, with all its investment in imaging technology, nobody much buys Kodak digital cameras and printers, while a company like Panasonic, with no background in cameras, is a middle market winner. Perhaps engaging lawyers to defend the patent portfolio rather than actually, you know, innovating, might be part of the problem.
And no, while until 2001 I was a Mac user, I won't have Apple products in the house nowadays. Just don't try to prise my new, Open Source, freely upgradeable, design-your-own-applications friendly Nokia N900 out of my fingers.
