Are Gerbils illegal in California?

  • Garbils are illegal in California because they can live outside in California and if they get lose the can that over and kill off the ecosystem of California which is not a good idea.
  • they also are a risk to California agriculture
  • I am sure most people are aware that species introduced into an environment can cause all sorts of problems.
    • For instance mice and rabbits in Australia have devastated crops, cats have devastated wildlife.
    • Gerbils are very adaptive animals and their has to be a concern of what would happen if animals released, on purpose or by accident, where to establish themselves in the wild.
    • Areas which offer a suitable environment and climate would be foolish not to consider such issues.
    • Australia makes importation of any 'alien' species very difficult. In america indivicual states make the decision and yes California has made the decision to limit some species to reduce the risk of release and environmental damage
  • For example, in California presently, you cannot own gerbils. Yet here in Virginia, they are legal. Why? Well, there are concerns that should the rodents escape or be released that they may begin breeding. The climate of Southern California is similar to the desert habitat of gerbils.
    • Already there are breeding colonies of feral gerbils in California that could impact the environment and harm native species.
  • American Gerbil Society - http://www.agsgerbils.org/About/California.php
    • We will not knowingly allow a citizen of CA to register gerbils with our organization, but they may be a member and receive newsletters, etc.
