Why is the mineralized skeleton the most important characteristic of vertebrates
Among the most important characteristics of vertebrates
is a mineralized skeleton. Its evolution made possible
various adaptive traits: endoskeleton for locomotion,
dermal skeleton for protection, and teeth for predation.
The evolution of this important trait has long been
investigated in the fossil record but critical information
for deciphering this process is also to be found in our genome.
