- http://www.sweetsurprise.com - Corn industry fighting back about "misconceptions" related to high-fructose corn syrup. They are running commercials where people say high fructose corn syrup is bad, but when asked the reasons, they can't articulate a reason. They then mention their website url.
So what is the truth?
Here are at least two things to think about:
-
- Compare the manufacturing processes. honey (which they try to make sound complicated), table sugar (which is complicated mainly because of steps to remove the color), and high fructose corn syrup (which sounds like it needs a lot of chemists to make it work).
- Read carefully the description of the manufacturing process for high fructose corn syrup. How natural does it sound?
- The amount of ears of corn used to make a table spoon of corn syrup is never mentioned on their site. You'd get tired of eating corn long before you'd get enough high fructose from the corn to make a difference in your diet. But with the concentrated form in high fructose corn syrup, you can easily get enough calories to negatively affect your diet and health. The problem with concentrating high fructose corn syrup is that all the other beneficial parts of the corn are removed and taken away from you.

A wellness physician friend of mine summed up the issue nicely about how to choose items for your diet:
- If it is packaged or processed, it's suspect.
Read about the manufacturing process, then ask yourself this question: Is there any way you could repeat that process in your kitchen? Do you really want to eat a lot of something that is so obviously artificially produced?
TODO:
- Put their info about the different sweeteners side by side for easier comparison
