I stopped at the Pigeon Point lighthouse. There is a hostel there, that offers accomodations right on the coast for just $20 or so a night. It is apparently very popular for school groups.
The Pigeon Point Lighthouse has apparently been closed to visitors since 2001, when a piece of the metal ring around the top of the lighthouse broke off. Apparently this ring is needed to hold the whole lighthouse together. There was a plaque from calparks.org asking people to donate money to restore the lighthouse.
I wonder how many of these kinds of exhibits are around the nation, hoping for donations sufficient to restore them? How much money would it take? How would that compare to what is being spent in Iraq? Could we use our troops to repair our national monuments and historical locations if they weren't busy with a futile attempt to rebuild Iraq?
I took a few pictures of the lighthouse, and tried to get the moon in the pictures. I'll post the pictures soon.
