Bringing in the Sheaves....

See also A Hymn to Sing While Building Software

As soon as I see those words I can hear the song! It’s one that really sticks with you, although I don’t think I know more than the chorus! It was used in several movies, including Texas ChainSaw Massacre, and Granny Clampett used to sing it in the Beverly Hillbillies! (maybe that’s why I know it!).

It’s a VERY old hymn written in 1874 by Knowles Shaw, and was based on Psalm 126:6, "He who goes out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with him." The music used is by George Minor, and was written in 1880. It’s a very old song!

It’s about feeling sad, and doing some hard work, and feeling better after, basically. Harvesting brings joy, along with food, knowing that our efforts have paid off and we will have food. I’m sure it’s probably an analogy for life’s ups and downs.....sowing seeds of kindness and reaping the sheaves....!

The words to the song:

Sowing in the morning, sowing seeds of kindness,
Sowing in the noontide and the dewy eve;
Waiting for the harvest, and the time of reaping,
We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves.

Refrain

Bringing in the sheaves, bringing in the sheaves,
We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves,
Bringing in the sheaves, bringing in the sheaves,
We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves,

Sowing in the sunshine, sowing in the shadows,
Fearing neither clouds nor winter’s chilling breeze;
By and by the harvest, and the labor ended,
We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves.

Refrain

Going forth with weeping, sowing for the Master,
Though the loss sustained our spirit often grieves;
When our weeping’s over, He will bid us welcome,
We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves.
