| I've never really seen the point of the social media thing. I have much more fun building big informational websites and wiki websites than I do goofing around with blogging, or "social media". I feel like a wiki gives me a lot of flexibility, but the social media thing seems so boring and straight jacketing. But John's email really summed it up nicely, and I quote him... |

Hey guys,
Social media reminds me a lot of high school. A lot. It's all about image, and who has the most friends, and who's the most popular, and who can be the coolest--and of course, results have
little to do with anything.
I don't know of anyone who's consistently making money using social media, save for a few local businesses on a small scale. I know a ton of experts making money selling how to make money on social media, but upon inspection very little of their income comes from the use of social media.
| In Amway, Nutrition For Life, and many MLM's, it is much the same: At the back of the room at every meeting was someone selling cassette tapes, CDs, or books about "how to work the system". They all can be summed up in just a few words: "Customer service, followup, and hard, consistent, work." No rocket science, even cavemen can do it... The people selling courses on how to make money are making more money from that that doing what their courses actually talk about. See my article Is there an easy way to become an internet millionaire with effective but free advertising. |

Recently, there was a yet another big to do over Facebook and their latest privacy settings. The "in crowd" is hemming and hawing and bleating about it, all scrambling to see who can squawk the loudest so they can be the coolest.
God forbid you use any common sense and not post something on Facebook you don't want the world to see. All one of your "friends" has to do is take a screen shot of your account, and either email it to the world, or post it on a blog somewhere. There's no such thing as privacy in social media.
| Or they argue with each other about "snooping" in the information that they have all made publicly available.. |
So, what's the en vogue response for all the wanna be cool people on Facebook? They are, get this, considering deleting their accounts. Some have even done so. How pensive. How totally cool and alternative.
Take that Facebook. I'm deleting a free account I pay no money for, and I'm going... where?
Well, nowhere, because there are no other platforms for the popular crowd to exhibit their popularity. Myspace is "so over" and Twitter is limited at best.
So, they will come back to Facebook, after a suitable amount of protest time, announcing their re-arrival and recreation of a free account to anyone who cares to listen.
And then in a few months, as they get to 200 or 300 friends, they are wondering who are all these people!
If one had their old account handy, one would see that the individuals spelling has not improved not a whit. |
This is, of course, nothing but sound and fury with no results or point attached to it. Nothing wrong with using Facebook or other social media to keep in touch, but it is what it is--just another communication mechanism, and a good way to get in trouble and waste time.
| But you feel good that you are also wasting a lot of other people's time saying "Hey look at me". Ultimate tool for class clowns.
Job one for class clowns: "Attracting Attention To Myself!" Dig Me! - George Carlin |
People who want to make excuses for no results in their life glom onto things like popularity, and image, always looking for things to be offended about. It's a great way to distract from the fact they're getting nowhere in life instead of taking action to get somewhere.
| Who can wear the biggest piece of costume jewelry giving their old jailcell number, or the first initial of their name.... Or send out surveys that include a slide show of their pictures, and the all important survey question for you to answer: "Do you like me?" |
If you want to be a success in life, study these people--and do the exact opposite of what they do. Delete your Facebook account if you wish - but only because it's a giant waste of time and you happen to have a real life to live.
On with the fun...

FB is getting a little carried away: As of today, there is a NEW PRIVACY setting called "Instant Personalization" that shares data with non-Facebook websites and it is automatically set to "Allow." Go to Account >Privacy Settings > Applications and Websites >InstantPersonalization>Edit Settings & uncheck "Allow". BTW i...f your friends don't do this, they will be sharing information about you. PLEASE COPY & REPOST!!See More

Yesterday at 9:28pm · Comment ·LikeUnlike · View Feedback (7)Hide Feedback (7).Robert Matthews It's not clear if unchecking this setting, which prevents external web sites from obviously personalizing themselves to you based on your Facebook info, will stop all info sharing with external entities. The only safe thing to do, is not put anything on Facebook you don't want the entire world to see, know, and share.

Devils Advocate Checking In: Who cares? If you post it here, just assume it is going to the world. Simple. If you don't want to risk that, don't post it! I mean really, how do you think Facebook makes money to run this service that you pay so much money to support? Oh right, it's free.... Someone is paying the bills.... How does it work? They expose what you type here hoping the rest of the world will come and read it, they get more hits, and they can fool some advertiser into paying them to put them in front of the eyeballs. They need you to post here to generate traffic for them so they can sell some advertising. They can't sell advertising if they can't show yourstuff all over.... So, if you want real privacy, make your own website, password protect it, and hand out logins to only your friends that you want to see it. Oh and pay your own bill for your private website...... Or take a real stand, and decide Facebook has gone too far and show them by deleting your account...

Someone complained today on Facebook:

And they got an answer:
How about this for a blog post: Should you delete your facebook account and use the refund to go and get a real life? http://www.bobsgear.com/x/EwASAQ
Devils Advocate done stirring this pot of stew....
