Colors of Love
Steven Stucky$16.98(USD)
This compilation of modern-day madrigals, the latest in a fascinating series of discs from the San Francisco-based all-male vocal group Chanticleer, won the Grammy for Best Small Ensemble Performance of 1999. The selections range over a variety of styles and aesthetics, from the haunting, hypnotic sounds of Steven Stucky's
Cradle Songs to the archaic, ethereal beauty and Eastern inflections of John Tavener's "Village Wedding." There are the soft (and somewhat affected) asperities of Bernard Rands'
Canti d'Amor as well as the gentle, almost English pastoralism of Zhou Long's "Words of the Sun" (beautiful!) and the colorfully exotic Orientalism of Chen Yi's
Tang Poems. Other examples of the wide range here are the self-conscious busywork of Augusta Read Thomas's
Love Songs to the darkly lush, 12-part weave of Steven Sametz's "In Time Of," with its radiant climax and pulsating chordal sonorites like the tolling of bells. All of this Chanticleer sings with striking freshness and commitment, virtuosic to a fare-thee-well, always sensitive to the emotional cues of the texts. The recording, made at Skywalker Ranch in January of 1999, is vivid and warm, and so is much of the music. Truly a winning disc.

Based on the novel by Luis Sepulveda, this drama stars Richard Dreyfuss as Antonio Bolivar, an elderly man who lives in a small village along the Amazon River. Many years ago, Boliver and his young wife came to the village as part of an effort to colonize the area; the couple was welcomed by Nushino (Victor Bottenbley), leader of the native tribes, but after a fever took the life of his spouse and attacks by fortune seekers caused the natives to turn their backs on the white settlers, Bolivar has been virtually alone, with only one close friend in the village, an aging dentist named Rubicondo (Hugo Weaving). Bolivar passes his time by reading florid romance novels passed along to him by Josefina (Cathy Tyson), Rubicondo's mistress who works as an aide for the village's mayor, Luis Agalla (Timothy Spall). Agalla, not an especially scrupulous man, has been selling illegal hunting permits to visitors hunting big game, and one of his customers made the mistake of killing and skinning a pack of jaguar cubs; the mother of the cats found the hunter, and tore him to shreds. Now likely to attack any human she sees, the mother jaguar is roaming the jungle near the village and must be found before she can kill again, and Bolivar steps forward to help with the dangerous assignment of finding and capturing the vicious cat. Love, faults and thoughts
Laurence Suckling$9.99(USD)
'love, faults and thoughts' is a vaguely connected trilogy of novellas that individually can be read in one sitting. Thoughtful, succinct fiction with the ability to draw the reader in, as well as letting them explore their own thoughts. A wonderful book to discover for yourself and pass on, but if futher synopsis is required:
'postcards' - Thoughts about his current life and past actions are provoked when the unnamed narrator starts receiving postcards from his ex-girlfriend sarah. but where exactly does that lead?
'come in and know me better man' - Chris Jenkins is on the verge of making a compilation tape for a beautiful woman he's just met. but who is he? and what is it he has to offer?... an interactive novella and thoughtful road trip.
'storytelling' - Do people have angels looking after them? are there such things as coincidences? just how should you feed ducks? the last of the novella trilogy promises more popular culture and a heart warming stab at redemption.
