This guy might have a stroke if he ever wanders into a Starbucks and sees how much they charge for a cup of tea....
Unjustified increase in price of teh tarik
I REFER to your report "Teh tarik to cost 10 sen more," (The Star, May 26).
Money facts
- US$1 = ~3.25Ringit Malaysia
- 100 sen per RM1
The president of the Malaysian Muslim Restaurant Operators Association linked the increase in the price of teh tarik to the fact that a carton of condensed milk (48 tins) had increased by RM9 i.e. 19sen per tin over the past year.
I picked up a tin of condensed milk at a supermarket and from testing found that the 505g content could yield 42 to 45 teaspoons.
I made myself a mug of Milo using three teaspoonfuls of the condensed milk.
It will therefore be fair to deduce that a tin of condensed milk can easily make 18 cups of teh tarik.
So, if each cup of teh tarik cost 10sen more, the contents of a tin of condensed milk will yield an additional RM1.80 profit.
The increase in profit is therefore RM1.61 based on per tin basis or RM77.28 per carton!
Where then, is the justification for the increase of 10sen for our cup of teh tarik?
It is time for our consumer associations to take a more pro-active stance in ensuring that the rakyat gets a fair deal for their money.
Compile a list of fair-price shops or stalls and circulate it or print it in the local newspapers to send a loud message to the errant establishments that they cannot ride roughshod over the consumers and still hope for support.
After all, we decide which shop or stall to spend our hard-earned money, don't we?
