I just had the chance today to attend a San Jose Police Department initial training session for police officers. The motorcycle instructors were recruiting new officers for their police motorcycle academy.
This was really great because I just happened to be reading an article yesterday about "Slow School", which is learning to make sharp turns at slow speeds on a motorcycle. This is the same thing that the officers were practicing.
They mentioned the MSF courses that can be taken.
It also turns about that the Alameda Sheriff department offers police motorcycle classes to civilians: link
- Basic
- Intermediate
- Advanced
Some great reviews - http://www.yelp.com/biz/alamedia-county-sheriffs-civillian-motorcycle-course-dublin
There are also some car driving courses: http://sheriffacademy.org/
$150 for the day course, plus $50 for car or motorcycle rental.
Another training term is "Late apex" (delayed start):
- Advantages of late apex turn: source
- Less likely to run wide
- More margin for error
- Better visibility into the corner
