Davids Responsibility For The Failures Of Solomon

You hit upon a thought that has been sticking in the back of my mind since this quarter began. In week one I gathered a list of Biblical text that outlined the life of Solomon. When I reviewed that list I noticed a few glaring thoughts that I had not considered before. The first was a lack of anything mentioned about social accomplishments by king Solomon. There was not one word of increasing the quality of education or living standards of his subjects. There were mentions of political gifts given and received. Nothing new under the sun there.

Another question that has been lodged in the back of my mind was the fact that Solomon asked God for wisdom to lead his people. How did he use this wisdom? Why is there no mention of his father, David handing down advice? There are a few verses where David gives Solomon advice, but is it good advice? Why is there a lack of good moral advice that we might expect to see in a book written by God? Why are there so few examples of a father and son talk? Did David really neglect his children?

I know we can not put all of the blame on David. Those of us that have children know that we make a lot of mistakes raising our children.

Kids just don't come with a manual. And even if we teach the same thing to 4 children, we will see 4 different results because of that freedom of choice thing God has given each of us.

If nothing else David is an example of a man that failed but none the less loved God. I just wonder why the Bible does not tell us more about what the parents actually handed down to the children.
