  • Pattern Day Trader - Do 4 round trip trades within 5 days, and you're whacked with the PDT rule that you must have at least $25,000 in your account. If you hold your trades until the next day, then you don't count as a day trader. I almost hit this without realizing it, I just happened to be in the "account settings" on my account and saw something about being flagged as a "pattern day trader" and wondered what the benefits were.

I am a very short term trader who looks for bullish signs (such as a gap up) and then placing a small profit stop like 1% and a 1 day maximum hold. The chances of a stocks price going up only 1% are excellent if you've found something that at the very least causes some volatility in the movement of the price (my favorite, as I said is gaps). Ideas on where to go for research on stocks

  • The dangers of taxes on exercising stock options that you then hold on to.... http://www.bradynet.com/bbs/nonem/100008-0.html
    • The paper gains seemed so real that employees began focusing on how to lower their tax bills and pocket more of their profits. Though there are differing tax treatments on different types of stock options, many recipients rushed to exercise their options and did not sell the shares immediately, with the goal of lowering their total tax bills. Gains on stock held at least a year are taxed at no more than 20 percent, while shorter-term gains can be taxed up to 39.6 percent. In some cases, holding onto the stock for a year after purchase could mean that all the profits were taxed at the lower rate.
    • Intertrust employees said holding onto the stock seemed smart even after the stock fell, because everyone believed it would come back. "Once the stock hit a certain price, people were sure it would get there again," said Erwin Lenowitz, the company's former chief financial officer.
