  • Garnet - What is even more risky is uninstalling software. Its difficult to test installers because the mix of what everyone has on their machines is different, but uninstallers are even less well tested. Sadly, if your machine is getting flakey, especially due to hiccups during installs and uninstalls, it might be good to backup your data, take your machine back to factory configuration with a fresh install of Windows. Then reinstall all the programs you need, run all the windows updates, applications updates, etc. If you use a lot of different software, this might take a whole day... Then before actively using your computer, make a "disaster recovery" backup with a product like Acronis. Then the next time your computer needs refreshed, you can go back to the disaster recovery image, and then update from there.... Yeah its a lot of work, but worth it if you depend on your computer. The other option is just buy another computer every couple of years to get a fresh machine to work with, so you can keep the old computer unchanged to use any old programs that might not work with the newer operating systems....
