We have 33 entries for FlashCamp. I was called on to help judge the entries according to the Contest Categories:

  • Coolest (I know, pretty subjective, but usually something jumps out at us)
  • Best Open Source (all you have to do is publish your code)
  • Best Use of Video (this one's obvious)
  • Best of Mobile (a major opportunity, very few people targeting mobile here!)
  • Best Student (gotta be in school right now)
  • Most Educational (broadly defined, this is for anyone targeting students or teachers)
  • Best Game (pretty obvious, but hotly contested)
  • Helps Developers (this will go to the person with the most Helpful Tickets)
  • Most Useful (again, fairly subjective, but also easy to judge once we see it)
  • Honorable Mention (for that app or design that doesn't fit any category, or a good runner-up)

Entrants:

  • http://www.360video.com/flashcamp/ - 360 degree camera attachment transformed with PixelBender - Proprietary code
  • Avenue Fighter - fight between McCain and Obama driven by the content of twitter messages about the candidates
    • 5 team members. They also showed some of the logged information that drove their game.
  • Bone Fish - Picture of a little girl fishing
    • Used the Bone Tool - Students - Santa Rosa Junior College - North Bay Adobe Users group - 3 members on team.
  • Flash Game - Team Burger Bonanza - 4 members - designer, pixel bender, developers - building a burger with different condiments, controlled by a webcam. Real time control via iphone?
  • Flash extension to combine multiple text fields into one text field - http://ajarproductions.com/blog - extension for flash development - opensource
  • Danceparty - how manipulate ipay. Manipulate dancer from the server side.
    • control the movements of the dancer on the PC screen from a server which is being controlled by a webpage on an iphone. Everyone could control their own character.
    • http://www.bellyfloop.com - pixel bender modify of sound
  • Fisticuffs - 2 team members - game - two players each trying to press a letter quicker than the other
  • FlashTones - Greg Arroyo - changes pitch and volume of a sound based on webcam input
  • Kitchensink - tried to throw everything in. pixelblender, dynamic audio, 3-d transformations. Using the camera and pixel blender filters, created filters that detect certain color saturation. 8 bit pixel modifier on top of music.
  • GaudIO - 3 musicians - analyzing a set of images, and modulate an audio file by the pixels in the filtered image. - Unique distortion modulated by the differences between the source file and the filtered image.
  • McCain Hugs - 2 team members - http://www.sweetrush.com and http://www.myandmybadself.com - listening to the changes of a stock. http://play.meandmybadself.com/svn/livestock/bin/index.htm
  • Memory Game - Not present
  • Space Monkey - 3 team members - cs4 hackathon slideshow - Meet the table - Jeremy, Adam, Aaron.... Goals: We don't need no stinking goals... Little Prince - disproportionate - photoshop planet and moon - progressive growth with tendrils
  • mp3 visualizer - 2 team members - demo worked - 3 different visualizers
  • online whiteboard. http://davr.org/flash/f10test/ - learning actionscript 3 and flex. uses file references - binary dump of the drawings. plays with the filters. - demo worked. Someone from the audience started interacting with it in the middle of the demo.
  • park on demand - Corona Rivera + one other individual - air widget to combine several sources of information about the Golden Gate Park.
  • pbmj - 2 team members - PB & DVR - Built to run with webcam - select filters in real time - can record a video to adobe format
  • Race to the Bottom - My entry
  • running man - two web designers making a running man with IK armature with no timeline. Speed adjusted by the cursor.
  • Scream-o-ball - team of students who met this weekend - Used the microphone feature, must use voice to play the game. Scream to make the ball rise. 3-d features.
  • Sign language 101 - http://www.jlnicky.com/signlanguage - educational tool that is cool. Student. First project in actionscript/flash. Jeanne Nichols and Jennifer Sanders. Print designer. Created a tool. Worked with the bones tool. 3-d tweening of the words. Showed elements of the bone tool. Spent a lot of time cutting the hand for palm movement.
  • Sound Musheen - sound from tweening - sound from keyboard - input from webcam - WII controller - http://www.wiiflash.org - WII controller is a bluetooth device. Playing a song an octave higher - sounded like the chipmunks. Speeding up the song, or slowing it down, but not changing the pitch. Open source on http://www.soundmusheen.com. Last year was http://www.artmusheen.com
  • Voting map - 2 students, grad student at UC Santa Barbara - Scaling the map by size of electoral votes. Kailen Wright Chris Thilgen, Indy Hurt http://www.geog.ucsb.edu/~indy/
  • Surf Alarm Widget - Demian Borba - Alarm - rotating cube - Set different mp3 for different conditions, and which beaches to check.
  • Vector shape project - importing data to flash. Likes the new drawing API in Flash 10. Open source project. Import SVG data. Animate the SVG data. Converts it to actionscript code, a class.
  • Video cloud - Data visualization - tags with information about videos. The gridview of a video. Likes 3-d ability to scale a video. Cloud of tags in video space. More popular it comes closer to the user.
  • Virtual theremin - input from motion in front of webcam
  • Web cam effects engine - Shows app with 3 processed versions of video, current video, previous frame, and next frame. Other things wanted to do: explore different things with video. Video & Audio obfuscation. Change video and audio. Facial tracking. Mapping an avatar to the video stream. Then tried pixelblender filters on the video.

Not seen:

Fortunately, we had about a dozen judges. My votes:
