Been trying out Mini Confluence Enterprise Plugin with the Android client program that interfaces to it. Using my Verizon HTC Incredible Android Phone.... Now using a Mac to edit this, and sometimes the android client....
| Installed | |
|---|---|
| Plugin | Mini Confluence Remote API Vendor: NIC Labs Plugin Version: 1.0.0-3 |
| Android Client | Installed the beta available today, 8/9/2010. |
| Confluence Version | 3.2.1_01 |
Problems so far:
- Unable to get a page edit to save, trihed twice,
- once when trying to save an edit to a page, the page was replaced this page with a blank page.
- The Android client for Mini Confluence Enterprise also seems like it replaced what I had in the clipboard with entire contents of the last page I was trying to edit.
- And there is no Undo in the Android text box editor.
- Got a "The application Mini Confluence (process com.niclabs.miniconfluence) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again." - crash of the android client when navigating away to the forum, and coming back to the client, going back to select the account I setup for my wiki....
- Double click item in the recent changes list, but the client is slow to respond.
- The android account should include an About box in it's menu so I know what version I am using.
On the third try, the edit worked.... Another test edit from client.

Hmmm. Trying out the mobile client url http://www.bobsgear.com/mc and it looks suspiciously identical to Android client.... trying an edit to this page with Infinity web browser.....
- Back to macbook to comment further... The edit worked, but the mobile client view on the android is stuck showing "Dashboard" at the top, and an edit box for this page that can't be edited. Tried reload, no help. Hard to tell if this is an infinity web browser problem, a Mini Confluence Android Client, or what. Tried going back, tried reloading, only the title bar got updated, the rest of the screen was whacked, continuing to show the text edit box.
- Going back to built in web browser that came with the phone.
- Tried editing from lost Samsung intrepid windows 6.5 smart phone: Lost the edit, ended up saving a blank page over this page again. Good thing this is a wiki with full revision history:
- Again, the mobile client view of the website seemed slow to respond when clicking on dashboard items (on both android and windows smart phone)
- It was difficult to get back to the post button and click the post button on the screen with my finger... Perhaps I should have used the trackpad keys for moving the cursor.
- The blank page save could have been caused by clicking the button twice because nothing seemed to happen the first time I pressed it.
- Editing on the windows smart phone was easier to select text, but for some reason the text got really huge, to where there were only maybe 15 or 20 characters per line. The slider for zoom on windows 6.5 internet browser is horrible, when I resized the font smaller, the width of the editing didn't increase.
- Windows smart phone ended up with "Error loading response"
- Trying again on windows smart phone, this time using trackpad cursor....
- (commenting from macbook) Right now browsing this article, and it is only using half of the width of the display.
Tried typing in a comment on the sprint phone at this point
- Tried to save it, clicked on the post button my using the mouse cursor. Waited 30 second for it to show up here on the macbook. Nothing. Went to preview, my edit was gone. Clicked the back button, got an edit box with one word in it: "undefined"
Here is what I typed on macbook as I was trying to use the windows smart phone to make an edit:
-
-
- Clicked in what looks like the edit text box (by using cursor keys to move the mouse cursor to the edit box). Got a cursor in the edit box, it is responding very slowly, and as I cursor down, the screen is getting repainted a line at a time over the top of what looked like a preview.
- As for the slowness: I am able to type on the intrepid keyboard at least twice as fast as the letters were appearing.
- It's even worse than that. Typing a sentence like "The screen is still on the word letters above" took 20 seconds to appear. The entire screen seems to be getting updated on every keypress.
-
Conclusion: Trying to edit your Confluence wiki with this product at this point is an exercise in frustration. You would be better off to carry a netbook for any serious editing of your wiki, don't expect to make major updates from the phone.
- Correction: Using this product at this point is beyond frustration: It is futile!
Just for comparison.... I'm going to go to the normal web view of this page and try to edit this page using the windows smart phone browser.
- The normal dashboard for this site takes over two minutes to appear on Sprint Windows smart phone
- It's also taking forever to appear on a laptop with a sprint USB cellular connection too.... http://dslreports.com/speedtest?flash=1 is showing less than 30kb/sec download speed! Yuck!
- Second try on sprint phone, dashboard appeared in over a minute.
- It took 7 seconds to appear on android default web browser
- Dashboard comes up in about 1 second on macbook with a different internet connection
- Calling Sprint about their internet outage 2010-08-09 - A confirmed sprint outage.
So the sprint internet problems are not helping with testing this plugin, will test some more from Verizon, their network doesn't seem to be having a problem tonight.
So here are some edits from the default browser in the android 2.1 phone:
- I am editing this from a regular web browser session on the Android phone.
- i am even trying this with voice. big got the text of the last sentence perfectly. i am still holding waiting for the sprint escalation team
- positioning to the right spot in a large text box is very difficult on android. this a voice recognition is working pretty well even for a long texa kisses . well okay that last 1 didn't do so well i said long text sentences. ive been trying optical trackpad it kinda works if you get use to it .
- letting voice recognition try to understand the Sprint on hold advertisements:love ya star 4 i.com slash check usage it's best day to think about to drive .
- most of the time Android voice recognition doesn't understand what the Sprint on hold lady is saying
Gave the android client one more try... it crashed when I went to the account for this sight. Tried it again, browsed to dashboard, then to a page with a link to an untreated page. Clicked the link, and the android client offered to launch me out to web browser! What's the point of the android client? It offers no add new wiki page link of its own.
