  3. Some kind of external CDROM drive to use as a boot drive. I use LG Slim External Super Multi DVD Writers Model GSA-E50L
  4. Download fujitsu drivers

Steps to install

      • Then ran HOTKEY-UTIL - "Provides onscreen indicators for hot keys (FN+F3, F4, F6, F7, F8, F9)....
      • Just noticed that the screen brightness hotkeys aren't doing anything.
      • Note on HOTKEY-DRV - The directory it created has a readme saying look in the control panel for unknown devices, delete them, then scan for new hardware, and hope windows picks up the new drivers.
        • I had 4 unknown devices. Deleted the first, did the rescan, nothing was found to install. Went ahead and deleted all the others, except for "Fingerprint Sensor". Ran "Scan for hardware changes". I think something was found and installed. I got four popups of the hardware wizard, and each time it couldn't find anything to install.

      • During restart, got the error dialog "FjSetSlt: SetState returned error. FjSetSlt is exiting."

        • Fingerprint sensor
        • Intel(R) 82801GBM (ICH7-M) LPC Interface FUJ02B1
        • Second, same as above, and details of ACPI\FUJ02E1
        • Third, Microsoft ACPI-Compliant system. Details: ACPI\FUJ02E3
      • FUJ02B1 is in the HOTKEY-DRV_Fujitsu_FUJ02B1_V1.21.0.0... directory... The readme in that directory is copyright 2003. By looking at the properties for the first unknown device, and verify that the details includes FUJ02B1, I can remove just that device, then rescan, then point it to this directory where the driver is at.
      • The Third device above driver is in SYS-EXTENSION-DRV_Fujitsu_FUJ02E3.... Do the same process as above on the 2nd of the unknown devices (which was the third on the list above).
      • For the FUJ02E1 - Use the singapore driver. Unzip to some location, then run the setup.exe.
      • There should be know unknown devices in the device manager.

      • The three buttons on the screen still aren't working.
      • Uninstalled the hotkey utility - now after reboot, the "FjSetSlt" message is still there... Remove "Fujitsu Button Utilities" from "Add Remove Programs"

      • Install hotkey utility again
        • Tried the bright down button, got an error popup: "Windows can not find "%programfiles%\fujitsu\utils\fjbright.exe"
      • Install U810_Button-UTILITY_Fujitsu - Getting an error during install... "Usage: SjSetSlt string_to_match button_map_to_copy"
        • Ran it a second time.
      • Reboot.
      • Removed these items, then reinstalled them in exactly this order

Next step is to Activate Windows, and then run the Windows Update to make sure your copy of XP is up to date with all the latest service packs.

The machine wants to install Windows XP Service Pack 3 now. The microsoft tips suggest a full system backup.

At this point, you will have invested several hours. You U810 will be very snappy and responsive. Do yourself a favor and create a disaster recovery backup. I recommend Acronis Backup. The home edition is just fine. It can create a disaster recovery backup to an external USB hard drive that can easily be restored with just the Acronis boot CD and the hard drive. Before embarking on XP with this machine, I had been using Windows Vista for a while. I made a copy of all my important directories, and then also made an Acronis DR backup of the drive. If I want to go back to Vista, I can do that.

Later when you finish installing all the apps that you want on the machine, make another DR backup. It is best to make both of these backups before you use the machine very much, that way you minimize the risk of creating a DR backup that includes viruses or malware.

Current status
  • Other than the upside down startup, the machine is working very nicely. Wakeup from hibernate less than one minute, and the shutdown is very fast too. The U810 is finally usable for on the fly notes.

For comparison, an HP tx1000 with AMD X2 1.8GHZ processor and vista takes 31 seconds to get to login, and approximately 60 seconds total time to get to usable. 2 cores with twice the speed, and vista takes the same time as the U810 with XP to boot. However, during usage IE 7 on the HP feels a lot slower than on the U810. I'll post actual numbers sometime later.

After installing SP3, and IE7, the machine is noticably slower. Reboot: From bios screen to login prompt: 42 seconds. To usable, 80 seconds, to get screen rotated properly, and browser window loaded, 115 seconds. The time to the login prompt is almost the same, it's the time after clicking login that is taking much longer, almost 2 minutes, compared with one minute before.

  • Closing the lid to standby - 10 seconds
  • Opening the lid - 5 seconds to login prompt.... 10-15 seconds to usable, but screen is upside down, 25 seconds until that is fixed.
  • So standby mode is still ok.
