Looked at the "Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager" today on a server I'm going to start using for websites, and I couldn't find the ASP.NET tab. I wanted to make sure that a new virtual web I'm setting up is enabled for ASP.NET 2.0. I ran all the Microsoft Updates, but still no ASP.NET tab in the properties for the new virtual web.

According to Microsoft, "The ASP.NET tab does not appear on x64-based editions of Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2003 R2. This tab also does not appear if only one version of ASP.NET is allowed in the web service extensions."

So I double click "Web Service Extensions" in the IIS plugin. It tells me I have these extensions enabled:

Active Server Pages
ASP.NET v1.1.4322
ASP.NET V2.0.50727
BLTS Server Extensions
FrontPage Server Extensions 2002
Internet Data Connector
Server Side Includes
VMWare Server
WebDAV

And all of them are enabled. One blog suggested "If you are looking for your ASP.NET tab, just run aspnet_regiis

C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727>aspnet_regiis -i -enable
Start installing ASP.NET (2.0.50727).

Finished installing ASP.NET (2.0.50727).

But that didn't help. Double checking the system:

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition Service Pack 2
Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Quad CPU @ 2.40GHz 8GB of RAM, Physical Address Extension

OK, here are the steps that restored the ASP.NET tab:

1) Stop the IIS Admin service (and any services that depend on it)
2) Open C:\WINDOWS\system32\inetsrv\MetaBase.xml in notepad or your favorite XML Editor. DELETE the line that reads 'Enable32BitAppOnWin64="TRUE"'
3) Start -> Run -> iisreset

Your tab should now be back and functional.
