In response to a post on their forums about install problems, that are also being experienced by others, I posted a question indicating I have a dedicated server, cpanel, and which version of their software. In response, and admin replied:
> _inappropriate ioctl for device_ > is not an Ikonboard error > it is a server mis-configuration error > contact your host for support.
That's it. That's the whole response! I wasted about 3 or 4 hours last night on their buggy installer, there were several different ways their installer is bombing out. Others are experiencing the same problem, but I didn't see any useful response in any of those threads. Looks like a major quality assurance problem.....
Here is my response:
| This is not helpful, it gives no clue what to do. What is the evidence that it is a misconfiguration, what configuration do you suggest that the host should change?
MySQL and Perl have worked fine on this machine for all kinds of other packages, for example every one of the wide variety of packages shipped with Fantastico..... BTW, "Blame it on the host" is often like blaming a lost password on the hardware. Judging from the problems reported in this forum, it seems like the installer script for ikonboard is rather buggy. Based on my 10 years of Linux experience, it looks like ikonboard boad installer needs wider testing.... I think most users give up, so these problems aren't getting shaken out. Unfortunately I have a customer asking for ikonboard, and the installer problems are wasting a lot more time than the customer will pay for.... In my case, I pointed out I am on a dedicated server, not a managed server. That means I am the host, with root level access to the machine. So what mis-configuration would I look for? If it was a managed server, what would I tell someone else to look for? Sorry for the lecture, Ikonboard is good when it runs, but I'm pretty unhappy about the install problems I ran into that wasted several hours last night. It looks like others in the forum are having the same problems, but finding no useful answers. |
