- When cousins marry, as happens in some polygamous families in Utah, odd genetic defects are common - Story
- Garnet's comment: The "Online Mendellian Inheritance In Man" (OMIM) database stores information about every disease with a known or suspected genetic component. I started using it in the early 90's via a gopher connection. It is a fun database to go and research the keywords like "first cousin marriage". All kinds of things go wrong when cousins kiss. Common are diseases that cause defects in production of cartilage, proteins like in the nails, and other proteins that bind the body together, leaving the person at great risk for things like aneurisms.
